The Silent Treatment and the Beating Heart

The Silent Treatment and the Beating Heart

In the Industry of Film, there are standards that show no signs of changing any time soon.

From format on page and screen to the way business is done and will be done, there are few exceptions.

In the Creative Writing Industry, the standards and trends often evolve rapidly. You either find yourself riding the contemporary waves or rolling against the rocks on the ocean floor.

How do you make yourself stand out in both worlds, if the standards are the same in one industry, but are rapidly changing in the other?

In this month's Sponsored Workshop, "The Silent Treatment and the Beating Heart," join Dallas Screenwriting Crew in the exploration of preparing for, talking about, and submitting your screenplay before you've even started it.

Guest Speaker - Sergio Almendariz

Currently, he is working on that Masters degree with plans to continue on with a career in academia.

This Workshop will include

- Writing your questions
- The look of your interview
- Setting up your interview (camera placement, audio, lighting, etc)
- The interview (how to act in an interview, keeping the interviewee comfortable, going off script with questions, etc.)

How to be a Director or Producer with Dallas Film Crew

As a creative organization, we are constantly changing and adapting our processes to create a better product than the last round. This year we are partnering with the crew to select the director who will provide the creative tone and vision for the complete project.

So instead of voting on a script, we are voting on a director who is attached to a script. We may even see multiple takes on the same script presented.

At the end of the day, each film only needs one director, come find out how we will choose ours n 2018.

Screenplay Pitch Day

This is your chance to hear pitches for our next round of short films. This is a great opportunity for aspiring directors. We will NOT be voting on Screenplays this year. This is a pitch to directors. The Directors can select from the screenplays that are pitched, can develop a vision based on that Screenplay to present to the rest of the film crew.

The voting will take place after Vision Pitch Day in which each Director will present what artistic tone and direction they want to take the screenplay in, in order to turn it into a finished movie.

If you're planning to pitch a project, contact Daniel Wells immediately. Daniel@dallasfilmcrew.org

Good luck to all of our screenwriters!

New Member Day February

Film is not something we do, film is a lifestyle. We believe that every great film begins with a great story and collaboration is the precursor to success. In January 2015 ten people got together with the idea of collaborating on film projects. In 2016 we had our first premiere and showed 5 completed shorts. A fire was lit and between then and our second premiere in June 2017 170 volunteers had completed multiple shorts and making new friendships. Most reaching inside themselves to discover creative, technical and artistic talents while making their first film.

Every month, the Dallas Film Crew holds a New Member Day to introduce who we are, what we do, and how we operate. People of all levels are encouraged to join, ranging from beginners new to film but interested in telling visual stories, and film veterans who are seeking to establish their network in Dallas and involvement in organized productions.

2018 is your year. It is the year you stop asking yourself why you are not making films.

Some quick FAQs
1. How long is the event?
It varies; We aim to be done by 4pm but sometimes we are done earlier or a bit late. You are welcome to step out at anytime if you have other commitments. 2. How many people can I bring?
You can bring anyone and as many people as you want!

3. Do I need to bring anything?
Bring a business card, but otherwise, you don't need much aside from yourself!

4. I am new and don't have much experience, should I come?
Yes! this is an orientation/social event. At the same time we will help you understand how you can start in our organization as a new OR experienced filmmaker.

If you have any questions, please post them here. See you Sunday!

Metrics Quantified - Originality, Entertainment, and Quality

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences considers three categories to nominate a film for an Oscar:

Originality, Entertainment, and Production Quality.

As a screenwriter--and the first step in the film process--how do we capture originality and entertainment within our screenplays? How, as a writer, can we ensure that the ensuing production is of quality?

In this workshop, we will break down each category, what role we play as a screenwriter, and how to capture the hearts and minds of filmmakers.

This workshop is part of the curriculum for Round 7.
